Teens who spend more time on social media are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and other disorders, while those who spend time with people their own age in group activities have better mental health outcomes. Encourage face-to-face interactions through sports, clubs, sleepovers, and family activities to support your child’s emotional well-being. Studies show that “the average teen reports spending more than seven hours a day on screen-based leisure activities (not including school and homework).” Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation, warns in his book that excessive screen time can crowd out sleep, exercise, and family interactions. Work with your teen to create a balanced daily schedule that prioritizes offline activities. If you are worried your teen isn’t making healthy choices with their time, don’t be afraid to set boundaries and limits to keep them safe.
