FAQ's
Q: Is the Learning Academy for adults who did not finish their high school diploma?
A: Yes, adults are welcome to earn credits toward graduation from either Tell City High School or Perry Central High School. Regardless of when a student attended school, he or she would be held to current Indiana guidelines for a diploma. Depending on the number of credits earned while in high school, it may be appropriate to continue toward a diploma or consider working toward the GED. When PCLA staff review high school transcripts, they can provide guidance on the best plan for each person.
Q: What does the Learning Academy provide for current high school students?
A: Students enrolled full-time in high school attend the Learning Academy during the evenings to earn recovery credits for a course they failed in traditional high school. Some students enroll part-time in traditional school and attend the Learning Academy part-time. For example, a student may attend vocational classes in the morning at Tell City High School and then attend PCLA in the afternoons for core academic classes. Finally, some students attend PCLA full-time.
Q: What are the attendance requirements at PCLA?
A: Attendance requirements are set by the Indiana Department of Education at a minimum of 3 hours per week; however, students are encouraged to attend more than the minimum time in order to make reasonable progress toward completing courses. The student is allowed the flexibility to arrange his own schedule to meet his unique needs.
Q: How is the Learning Academy different from traditional high school?
A: The primary difference is that credits are awarded based on mastery of course content without a "seat time" requirement. In other words, students work independently, and when they complete all the requirements for a course with a mastery of 80%, then they are awarded a credit. Course content is delivered via traditional textbooks and online courseware.
Q: What does it cost to attend PCLA?
A: Fees range from $5.00 to $20.00 depending on what type of course you take. These fees go toward the cost of books. Hard back textbook rental fees are $10.00; soft back textbook rental fees are $17.00, and online courses are $20.00.
Q: Can I do the work for my courses at home?
A: A portion of the coursework can be done as homework; however, the majority of the work must be completed at the Learning Academy. Currently, we allow a student to complete 2 lessons at home for each day the student attended during the week.
